A Leading America

http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/27/opinion/doherty-america-opportunity/index.html

This article talks about building a new "American Dream." America is known to have the the capital and resources to make changes in the world. This is America focusing on foreign aid rather than America itself, which leads to the idea of American Exceptionalism. Americans believe we are superior and have enough power to make these changes. We have this idea that we are supposedly given the right to govern foreign affairs. If America does make these changes, America can spread the idea of the American Dream to other countries. America is the leader, and has the ability to change the future of others. Solving our own problems, like the debt, should be number one on our list of changes for the future, but instead isn't due to how much pride America takes in being the so-called "best."

  1. I definitely feel that this article relates to the idea of American Exceptionalism. Despite numerous difficult tasks, such as increasing the world's food production by 60%, that the world faces in the near future, the author of this article shows optimism in America's ability to lead the world in numerous respects. The author makes it clear that America was able to rise to the occasion to become a world power in the past, and that as a result of our superior resources and population, that our country is certainly capable of doing it again. In a way, this also includes the notion of allowing people in other countries to achieve the "American Dream."

  2. I found the relation between American Exceptionalism and globalization very close to this article. It is a fact that America thinks their country superior, but this is probably due to being the leading country in the world. With America with so many people and so much land, it is possible to make changes easier compared to smaller countries. If America takes the lead, i feel globalization becomes possible.

  3. I agree that this article has strong ties to the American Dream on a global scale and especially American Exceptionalism. America seems to always have this notion of change for the better. The author makes it clear that American Exceptionalism can sweep the world if, and when, we make the necessary changes to prove we can actually be the best country. We can promote a new American Dream of the 21st century to the world as soon as we control the affairs of the U.S. However, personally, I find it hard to believe that we will become the strongest nation anytime soon because of the horrible economic and financial crises we have managed to dig ourselves into. It seems that while we cling to the old idea of American Exceptionalism, it is exactly that, old. We are going to need to find an entirely new/reformed American Exceptionalism and American Dream if we want to come anywhere close to our best moments in history and the ability to help other countries achieve a better state of affairs.
