Black managers

http://inamerica.blogs.cnn.com/2012/11/21/black-advertising-executives-pay-it-forward/

I found this article on CNN talking about how black managers in the advertising industry population is very low. It said that only 7% of the managers are black. This data reminded me racialization and color blind racism. The PDF link showed that there is not a huge percentage difference in the number of employees between whites and backs but when it comes to managers, a huge gap in the numbers form. I thought this has to do with the hegemonic control of the whites in the industry.  I am guessing their power in the industry puts blacks in a disadvantaged position and ended up with a statistic like this unconsciously.

  1. Many of these studies are interpreted without regard to any background. Yes, I do agree that all too often, when a white individual and black individual with identical qualifications are the candidates for a position, the white individual will most likely be pick, but we must look at the background or we attribute more racism to this large gap in black employment than is called for. First, according to the 2011 census by the U.S. Census Bureau, only 13.1% of the population of the United States was black while a much larger 78.1% was white. Therefore, there are far more individuals of other races to apply for these jobs. Second, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, only 14% of college students are black. This points to the fact that other races have a much larger amount of individuals who qualify for most jobs. Third, the statistic is the 7% of managers are black. What about other races? Whites are not the only other people who hold managerial positions. Again, I do agree that racism does sometimes become a factor, but these statistics cannot be taken out of context. Many other components lead to why this has occurred, and one of those many components is color-blind racism.
