Nosy America?

foxnews.com/politics/2012/11/18/us-britain-warn-about-risks-israel-becoming-involved-in-ground-war/

The United States is giving advice to two autonomous countries on how they should govern themselves and regarding rocket attacks between Israelis and Palestinians. Neither nation requested advice regarding the conflict, but Israel is allied with America, so America feels it has the right to counsel Israel even when it is not solicited. The U.S. is also attempting to get other countries in the Mideast to intervene to gain peace.
This relates to the idea of American Exceptionalism. The U.S. believes because we are such a well-developed nation and superior to these quarreling nations, we have the the right to tell them how to govern themselves “properly” and to suggest a “better” foreign policy.

  1. I have always agreed with arguments like these. Why must we always meddle in other countries issues, when we ourselves still have our own issues to fix and resolve. If we used all the effort and money that is used on the issues in our country, perhaps our problems could be resolved faster. This idea of American exceptionalism seems, where we think we are so superior and great and need to help all these inferior countries ignores the fact that we are far from perfect, and need to resolve our own issues before others

  2. I agree with Brian. Sometimes, the United States focuses too much on problems overseas and/or problems with other countries rather than focusing on the many problems America has. This idea of American exceptionalism is so deeply rooted in our political system and culture. America always has to have a say in other countries' problems even though the country facing the issues probably has some sort of idea as to how to solve the problem. How can other countries respect America if America can't lead by example and fix itself first?

  3. I agree that this article indicated the idea of American exceptionalism. America always thinks it's unique and qualitatively different. In this news, US kept telling Israel what to do and how to do it. Since Israel didn't follow US government's advice, the government sought global support, asking Egypt and Turkey to intervene the conflict, and then blamed Egypt for not doing enough. US seems to focus too much on leading the rest of the world and acting like a world police while overlooked issues within its border, such as unemployment.
