I saw this poster at the library the other day and I had to stop to take a picture because it instantly made me think of this class. The other day when we were talking about cultural narratives such as the American Dream (which is mentioned above in the poster) it made me think of all the things that we associate with being American. In the example it says "white bread" and "apple pie" which I have heard of being associated with America but "mom" is not something that I have heard of as being strictly American. What interested me was the purpose of this poster and why was it displayed in the library?

I thought "mom" was random too. Maybe there is an association between food (white bread and apple pie) and mom for its stereotype of baking done by woman. The spacing struck me too. Does it have to do with what's on the background? I can't really see it but is it an eagle or something?
ReplyDeleteI'm not entirely sure but the poster was attached to others on the bulletin board which is why it looks like it cuts off.
ReplyDeleteI saw that poster too, and instantly thought about this class. I forget exactly what it was next to, but it might have given more indication about exactly what those things were in reference to. I feel like mothers in America, have become associated with staying at home, instead of working, and making lunches and prepping kids for school. Typical American story, man goes off to work, mother stays home and makes the sandwich on white bread then sends the kids off to school. Perhaps picket fence would go well on the list as well?
