Cyber Monday+Material Culture

Cyber Monday 2012 has passed, and the figures show that cyber monday sales have increased by about 30% than last year, making it the largest spending day to date. A good portion of the products sold were new the new tablets--i.e iPad, Kindle, etc.
This makes me feel as if a new era of material culture has been ushered in. As Carolyn De La Pena mentioned how there was a craze in the 1800s with electricity and electric based products, it seems that now manufacturers are looking at starting this trend of tablet computers and other technology pieces to create a similar time period.

  1. I feel that online shopping is taking over and is seen as cultural hegemony (mentioned in later post). Personally, I think the number of people shopping on the internet for cyber Monday is going to keep growing as it offers an easier and safer way to shop (don't have to deal with crowds). But, looking at technology itself, technology has always been apart apart of our society, it's just that now it's just now technology is becoming more popular due to the affordability.

  2. Similar to this idea, I feel as though people are shopping online more often to avoid crowds and because they do not want to leave the comfort of their own home. People are increasingly more and more busy with every day tasks, jobs, and school work and do not have the time to go out and go shopping. This can relate to the ease in which our society is making things due to the lifestyle in American culture today.
